'Bulawayo, 1895', Matabele War (1893-1896), 1895

Group photographic portrait: (back row, L-R) Lord Henry Paulet and Lady Charlotte Paulet; (front row, L-R) Major Henry (Harry) White and Captain Charles (Charlie) White. Photo also includes three dogs and all are sitting on a porch of a house in Bulawayo, Matabeleland.

Lord Paulet (1862-1962), 16th Marquess of Winchester, travelled to South Africa in 1891, where be befriended Cecil Rhodes and the pair went on hunting trips together. He married his first wife, Charlotte Paulet (nee Howard), the following year.

Major Harry White commissioned into the Grenadier Guards, arriving in South Africa in early 1895 and Captain Charlie White had joined the Royal Fusiliers in 1881, but from 1892 he was Chief Commissioner of Police for the British South Africa Company.

From a collection of 30 photographs relating to Rhodesia in the 1890s and the Matabele War.
