Combat helmet Mk 7, worn by Corporal Mark Ward, The Mercian Regiment, Afghanistan, 2010

Mark Ward of the Mercian Regiment was promoted to corporal in February 2010. Having served previously in Northern Ireland and Iraq, he embarked on a six month tour of Afghanistan in May 2010, as part of Operation HERRICK XII. Corporal Ward was awarded the Military Cross for demonstrating exemplary gallantry and leadership during counter-insurgency operations in Helmand Province. During a number of intense ambushes and fire-fights Ward's actions helped save lives, regain the initiative and defeat enemy fighters.
