The AS90, designed and built by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Limited, was adopted by the British Army in the early 1990s to replace its ageing Abbott and M109 self-propelled guns. The AS90 is operated by the Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Artillery and was used in action in Iraq from 2003.

The AS90 is operated by a crew of five and is fitted with a 155 mm L31 39 calibre gun with a range of up to 30 km. Its automated loading system allows the gun to fire in rapid bursts or to deliver a sustained hour-long bombardment of two rounds per minute.
