Captain (later Ensign) Thomas Fowke (1654-1708), Colonel Nicholas Lepell's Regiment of Foot, 1685 (c)
Oil on canvas by an unknown artist, circle of Willem (William) Wissing (1656-1687), 1685 (c).
Three-quarter length to left, wearing a cuirass and waist sash; holding a spontoon in his right hand with his left hand resting on a helmet.
In 1707 Captain Fowke exchanged his commission in favour of his son (also Thomas Fowke) who was then an ensign in his father's regiment. He thus became an ensign while his son took on his captaincy, and went on to have a long military career, eventually reaching the rank of lieutenant-general. He died in 1765. Thomas Fowke (senior) was murdered by his servant in 1708.
