Formation badge, 20th Armoured Infantry Brigade, subdued variant, 2001 (c)

Woven square patch with black embroidered armoured clenched fist on a blue ground, with black embroidered border. This subdued variant of the mailed gauntlet came into use around 2001. The insignia is representative of the armoured formation's 'hard punch'.

Its predecessor unit was the 20th Light Armoured Infantry Brigade, formed in September 1939, at the start of World War Two (1939-1945). It was re-titled 20th Armoured Brigade in April 1940, becoming part of the 1st Armoured Division in the same year. Having acted as a training force, the Brigade was disbanded in the Spring of 1943. It was reformed in September 1950 and became part of the British Army of the Rhine, based in Germany as part of 6th Armoured Division.

Following the end of the Cold War the Brigade survived defence cuts, amalgamating with 33rd Armoured Brigade in 1992, and served in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan. It was re-titled with its current name in 2015, and with the incorporation of more mechanised infantry, became part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation's (NATO) Very High Readiness Joint Task Force in 2017. In 2020 the British Army describe the Brigade as the Lead Armoured Task Force and Vanguard Armoured Infantry Brigade. 20th Armoured Infantry Brigade is now based in Bulford in Wiltshire.
