Medal group awarded to Battery Sergeant Major W Smith, Royal Artillery and Elswick Battery, 1st Northumberland Artillery Volunteers, 1878-1901
The medal group comprises Distinguished Conduct Medal, 2nd Afghan War Medal 1878-80 and a Boer War campaign medal, the Queen's South Africa Medal 1899-1902, with four clasps: 'Cape Colony', 'Orange Free State', 'Transvaal', 'South Africa 1901'.
Battery Sergeant Major W Smith received one of two Distinguished Conduct Medals awarded to Elswick Battery, 1st Northumberland Artillery Volunteers, for service during the Boer War (1899-1902). Elswick Battery were equipped with Armstrong Whitworth 12 pounder guns commissioned by Lady Meux. One of these guns is held in the collection of the National Army Museum (NAM. 1991-11-42-1).
