Lilian Franklin joined the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry in 1909 and served with considerable distinction during the Great War. She was mentioned in dispatches in 1917 and awarded an OBE in 1918. A natural leader, she was in charge of the first convoy of FANYs driving for the Army in 1916. She became commandant of the FANY in 1924.

The First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) was formed in 1907 and acted as a first aid link between front-line fighting units and field hospitals. As well as running hospitals, FANYs drove ambulances and set up soup kitchens and canteens for the troops during World War One. It was the first British women's voluntary organisation to go out to the Western Front.
