'Southampton. Bargate', 1914 (c)
Photographic postcard, World War One (1914-1918), 1914 (c).
The medieval Bargate in Southampton town centre, with shops on either side and a horse and carriage. The postcard is written from Battery Sergeant Major Walter William Hulland, 29th Battery, Royal Field Artillery to his wife Barbara who was staying in their married quarters at Bulford Camp, Salisbury. There is no postmark but it is likely that it was sent from Southampton as the regiment prepared to leave for the front line in France in August 1914.
From a collection of archives relating to Lieutenant Walter William Hulland, Royal Field Artillery, 1913-1920.
