'In the heat of battle', 1916 (c)
Oil on canvas by Lilian Cheviot (1876 (c)-1936), 1916 (c).
This dramatic painting shows a Royal Horse Artillery gun team galloping along a road during a bombardment during World War One (1914-1918). The artist, Lilian Cheviot, studied at Frank Calderon's School of Animal Painting and Walter Donne's Life School. She specialised in painting animals and exhibited a study or dogs at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1895 and one of kittens in 1899.
