Silver salver presented to Lieutenant Colonel Sir James Dunlop Smith (1858-1921), KCS, KCVO, CIE, 1910

Silver salver inscribed with various signatures and the inscription, 'Dunlop. From the Viceroy's Staff in memory of many happy days together. 8th Feb 1910'.

Born in Calcutta on 24 August 1858, Sir James Dunlop Smith was commissioned into the 22nd (The Cheshire) Regiment of Foot as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1879. In 1882 he became a lieutenant in the Indian Staff Corps, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on 13 August 1905. This salver dates from the end of his tenure (1905-1910) as Private Secretary to the Viceroy and Governor General of India, Gilbert Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 4th Earl of Minto (1845-1914).
