Cap badge, The Royal Gloucestershire Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment, 1994 (c)
Die-struck anodised aluminium by Firmin, London, with a sphinx above a cartouche with the campaign title, 'Egypt', on a Maltese Cross.
This regiment was formed in 1994 by merging The Gloucestershire Regiment and The Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment (Berkshire and Wiltshire). It was renamed The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry in July 2005. Two years later it was merged into The Rifles.
The sphinx emblem on this badge relates to the service of the Gloucestershire Regiment's predecessor unit, the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot, at the Battle of Alexandria in Egypt in 1801. For fighting off French attacks from the front and the rear during the battle, the unit was later granted the distinction of wearing badges on the front and rear of their headdress.
