Gold Medal of Merit for 20 Years Good Conduct issued by the 13th Foot, (1825)
The 13th (1st Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot Medal of Merit was awarded for seven, 10, 14 and 20 Years Good Conduct prior to the introduction of the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1830. The 20 year medal appears to have been authorised by Lieutenant-Colonel Michael McCreagh around 1825, but most likely was not produced before the end of 1826, when the regiment was permitted to use the battle honour for Ava on their insignia.
Only three examples of this type of medal are known, although this is not the rarest of the 13th Foot Medals for Merit as there are no known examples of the 10 year medal.
