India General Service Medal 1854-95, with clasp, 'Perak', awarded to Sergeant Anthony Mitchell, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs)
Silver, circular campaign medal with an effigy of Queen Victoria and inscription, 'Victoria Regina', on the obverse; on the reverse, the figure of Winged Victory crowning a kneeling figure with a laurel wreath; red and dark blue ribbon with clasp, 'Perak'.
The campaign in Perak (1875-1876) in north west Malaysia was fought between British and imperial forces and Malay forces attempting to end foreign influence. After James Wheeler Woodford Birch, a British administrator, was murdered, reinforcements, including 1st Battalion, The Buffs, were sent from Hong Kong, Singapore and Burma to defeat the resistance movement. The British forces assaulted strongholds such as Pasir Salak and eventually captured or killed the resistance leaders and restored colonial rule.
