Plaster modello for a plaque on the south side of the base of the City of Plymouth's Boer War Memorial obelisk, 1902 (c)
Possibly by Onslow Whiting, 1902 (c).
The Boer War (1899-1902) was the first war where the commemoration on war memorials of officers and ordinary soldiers killed became widespread. Regiments were linked to specific counties and local people took pride in their soldiers. Volunteer soldiers had particularly strong ties with the locations where they usually lived and worked. The foundation stone of the Plymouth memorial was laid by Lady Butler on 4 August 1902 and the completed structure was unveiled by Lady Audrey Buller on 8 August 1903.
