The Defence of Rorke's Drift, 22 January 1879

After the disaster at Isandlwhana, this outpost, held by 140 men of the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot was attacked by a force of over 4,000 Zulus. They had improvised defences from mealie bags and crates of tinned meat and after a determined defence, the Zulus were beaten off leaving over 400 dead on the battlefield. The garrison lost 25 men. Eleven Victoria Crosses and five Distinguished Conduct Medals were awarded.
