After initial service with the 1st Battalion 7th Bengal Native Infantry and as aide-de-camp to Major-General James Morris, Cunningham was appointed to command the 2nd Rohilla Cavalry, when it was raised on 26 July 1815. He fought with this regiment in the Bareilly insurrection of 1816, as a result of which his health suffered, and he was later awarded an additional pension in respect of this service. He retired in 1821 and became an Especial Judge in Mauritius, where he died in 1838.
