Charity flag seller's hat band or brassard, Boer War, 1900 (c)
Silk satin yellow ribbon with the inscription, 'Relief of Ladysmith, Feby, 28th, 1900', with clasped hands flanked by the names, 'Buller', and 'White', with the unit title, '2nd West Yorks The Old 14th', below.
The named officers and the image of the handshake reference Lieutenant-General (later Field Marshal) SIr George White, the commander of the besieged British forces at Ladysmith, and General Sir Redvers Buller who was involved in the hard-fought campaign to relieve the town.
Ribbons of this type were worn by those collecting from the public for regimental funds and comforts for the troops during the Boer War (1899-1902).
This piece of ribbon is believed to have been used as a brassard by flag sellers for the Prince of Wales' Own (West Yorkshire Regiment), raising money following the Relief of Ladysmith on 28 February 1900. The length of the ribbon suggests, however that it is more likely to have been used as a hat band.
