The Japanese Forces surrendering to the Supreme Allied Commander, South East Asia, Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten, Singapore, 12 September 1945

Photograph, World War Two, Far East (1941-1945), 1945.

Representatives of the Empire of Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender in Tokyo in the presence of General MacArthur on 2 September 1945. Subsequently, more surrender ceremonies were held in other locations which had been held by the Japanese. The last of these, held two weeks later, took place in the Municipal Building of Singapore, with General Seishiro Itagaki and Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten signing an Instrument of Surrender which officially ended the Japanese occupation of South East Asia.

One of 233 official photographs collected by Captain Roy Wiltshire in his capacity as Editor of the Indian Army Review.
