Horseshoe punch, Sergeant Farrier William Lewis Old, 21st Lancers, 1903 (c)

Solid wrought iron bar with a hammered pick at one end and a hammer chisel at the other.

Old enlisted in the 21st Hussars on 16 September 1892. Old served in the 2nd Sudan War (1896-1899) and Somaliland (1901-1904). He received the Queen's Sudan Medal 1896-97, the Khedive's Sudan Medal 1896-1908 with clasp for Khartoum and the Africa General Service Medal 1902-56 with the clasp for Somaliland 1902-04. Old was discharged on 13 September 1913, at the age of 42.

From a tool case used by Sergeant Farrier William Lewis Old of the 21st (Empress of India's) Lancers. The case contained eleven tools designed for a variety of tasks, including cleaning hooves and changing horseshoes.
