Ross M1910 Mk III .303 inch bolt action rifle, 1915

This was the main rifle of the Canadian Army in the early years of the First World War (1914-1918). Nevertheless, it proved too delicate for the conditions of trench warfare and there were problems with its ammunition. It was withdrawn from general service and replaced by the standard British Short Magazine Lee Enfield. However, the Ross continued to be used by many Canadian snipers until the end of the war due to its accuracy.

This particular rifle was presented to Secretary of State for War Jack Seely DSO in 1914 by Colonel Sam Hughes, Minister of Militia and Defence for Canada. Seely later commanded the Canadian Cavalry Brigade on the Western Front.
