'a Walking Wounded Post. Ready for 1st July 1916', Royal Army Medical Corps field hospital near Bray on the Somme, 1916
Watercolour, signed and dated at lower right 'G R Spragg July 1916', by Sergeant-Major George R Spragg, 54th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps, attached to 18th Division.
A note on original backing board reads: 'Walking wounded post nr Bray on the Somme. We prepared for 1,000 (Thousand) wounded - had over 3,000 (Three Thousand) between 9 a.m. & midnight Captain (later Major) Kindrew (?) of Barnstaple, Devon O.C. myself acting Sgt Major - there were in all 5 doctors (five) & 30 (thirty) staff.'
Spragg was a keen actor, gaining a reputation, as a member of the British Empire Shakespeare Society. He served in the Boer War (1899-1902) with the Post Office Rifles, and subsequently worked for the Worcester Post Office. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in World War One (1914-1918). After the Great War he worked with Sir Frank Benson's Shakespearean company, which included tours of South Africa. Spragg's artistic skills were utilised working as an exhibition organiser for the Disabled Sailors and Soldiers Mutual Association.
