Socket bayonet for the Militia or Marine Pattern .78 inch flintlock musket, 1759

Socket bayonet with 17 inch blade.

This bayonet would fit the cheaper quality musket which was introduced with the raising of militia under the 1757 Militia Act. Many more arms were required because of the seven years war. At the time of its introduction, the Line Infantry were using Long Land Pattern muskets.

The Marine and Militia Musket is a separate pattern of arm authorised for a particular purpose. This musket was different to the Short Land Pattern, which did not come until general issue with the Line Infantry until after 1775.
