Scabbard for Infantry officer's presentation sword, Captain Edward Fleming, 31st Regiment of Foot, 1811
Wooden scabbard covered in black leather, with gilt metal mounts, made by Samuel Brunn, No 56 Charing Cross, London.
The sword and scabbard were presented to Fleming by the Lloyds Patriotic Fund, following his gallant conduct, and wounding, at the Battle of Albuera in 1811, during the Peninsular War (1808-1814).
Merchants established funds to reward success in countering enemy threats to British commerce. The Lloyds Fund recognised officers' distinguished actions by granting cash, gold plate and decorated swords.
