The 28th Madras Native Infantry was raised in 1798 as 2nd Battalion, 14th Regiment of Madras Infantry. It fought in the 3rd Maratha War (1816-1819) and was renamed 28th Madras Native Infantry in 1824. The term 'Native' was dropped in 1885. The regiment served in China during the 3rd China War (Boxer Rebellion) (1900-1901). In the 1903 reform of the Indian Army the regiment became the 88th Carnatic Infantry. It served in Mesopotamia during World War One (1914-1918) and was disbanded in 1922.

The Coronation of King George V and his wife Queen Mary took place on 22 June 1911 at Westminster Abbey. This was followed by the Delhi Coronation Durbar on 12 December 1911, which was attended by around 100,000 people.
