Walking stick from Tipu Sultan's palace, 1799 (c)
White bone (possibly sword fish jaw).
The gold collar on the head is inscribed with details of the stick's history; it was taken from the palace of Tippoo Saib [sic] after the storming of Seringapatam in 1799 and was bought from India to England by the brother of Mr Jon J Weise's nurse. His sister then gave it to the Weise family and on 25 May 1872 it became to property of Mr Frederick Blackman, London.
Tipu Sultan, Muslim ruler of Mysore, was nicknamed the 'Tiger of Mysore', and effectively opposed British rule in southern India until his death at Seringapatam in 1799.
