Spur, Abyssinia, 1868 (c)

The spur was owned by Sir Charles Fraser (1829-1895) and acquired by him during the campaign in Abyssinia (1867-1868).

Wrought iron ten pointed rowel, which has become detached from its mount; a double bracket which attaches to a heel grip; one small bracket loop for a chain is attached to the left arm of the grip; one boot chain remains; the outside of the grips and the rowel mount are decorated with small swags, dots and asterisks.

Fraser served with the 7th (The Queen's Own) Light Dragoons (Hussars), the 11th Hussars and the 11th (Prince Albert's Own) Hussars. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). He eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant general and retired from the Army in 1886 after becoming a Tory Member of Parliament in 1885.
