Chet Singh, a chaprassie of Field Marshal Lord Roberts, 1890 (c)

Lord Roberts was Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army between 1885 and 1893 and during this time was attended by many Indian servants. A chaprassie was an Indian term for a messenger, although they would also perform other duties such as doorman or footman.
