Sappers constructing an Olafson foot bridge, 1944 (c)

Photograph, World War Two, Italy (1943-1945), 1944 (c).

Indian sappers construct a foot bridge across a watercourse during the Italian winter. British, Indian and Dominion engineers constructed or repaired over 3,600 bridges in Italy during the period 1943-1945. This was due to the terrain over which the armies advanced and the destruction of bridges by the retreating Germans.
