British soldiers examine a knocked-out Pz Kpfw III, 1942 (c)

Photograph, World War Two, North Africa (1940-1943), 1942 (c).

The Panzer Mark III was the main German battle tank for the first two and a half years of the war and a mainstay of Rommel's Afrika Corps in the Western Desert. Fast and manoeuvrable, it was well suited to desert conditions. It could be fitted with either a 37 mm or 50 mm cannon.

From a collection of 34 photographs relating to different theatres in World War Two.
