Handheld Horn detector, 2013 (c)

The Horn detector with telescopic pole is used to sweep the ground or walls to locate components in mines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). During the Afghanistan campaign (2001-) Horn detectors were issued to All Arms as well as Advanced Search Teams (AST) to detect low or non-metal IEDs more effectively than the Vallon detectors they replaced. The user is alerted upon detecting components via an LED bargraph, an audio signal or a vibration.
