Gun barrels made from bronze, an alloy of about 90 per cent copper and 10 per cent tin, were more expensive than iron, but also stronger. This artillery piece was cast between 1809 and 1821 while Major (later Major-General) JD Sherwood was Commissary of Stores at Fort William, Calcutta.
