Battle

Oil on linen by Jules (Julian) George, Ministry of Defence (MOD) war artist, 2010.

During a firefight between the British Army and Afghan insurgents near Musa Qala, Helmand, Afghanistan in February 2010, the artist took up position with the Household Cavalry Fire Support Group at a vantage point on a hillside overlooking the area. Here he made sketches which he used later in creating a series of paintings, including this line of British infantrymen deploying under cover of a red smoke grenade.

The artist went to Afghanistan during Operation HERRICK in February 2010 as a war artist for the MOD, and was embedded with 2nd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards), part of 11th Light Brigade.
