Knee, ankle and foot orthotic, 2013 (c)-2018
Made by Blatchford and used at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court, Surrey, 2013 (c)-2018.
The Knee, Ankle and Foot Orthotic (KAFO) is used to support a limb that has not been amputated but that has been damaged. Gun shot or fragmentation injuries from detonated improvised explosive devices (IEDs) can often damage nerves and vital structures in the lower limbs and this sort of orthotic equipment can be used by patients that have sustained such wounds. The KAFO locks at the knee joint to give the wearer the ability to stand, and unlocks to allow them to sit and so is used by wheelchair users who wish to stand for a specific occasion such as at a parade.
