Plaster cast of left transfemural above knee amputation, 2018 (c)

Produced by Blatchford technicians at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court, Surrey, 2018 (c).

After an initial assessment by the Prosthetics Department at Headley Court a plaster cast of the patient's residual limb is taken, to make a socket for their first prosthetic limb. A new amputee can expect to have a new socket made roughly every 3 months, due to fluctuation in the residual limb size. It is expected that an amputee's residual limb will settle down after 2 years.
