Members of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles, Helmand, 30 July 2006
Photograph, Afghanistan, 2006.
The Gurkhas stand in front of a twin-rotor Chinook helicopter. These are used to deploy troops for operations in Helmand Province, as well as for ferrying supplies and evacuating the wounded. The helicopters regularly come under attack from Taleban insurgents armed with small-arms, surface to air missiles and rocket-propelled grenades.
