Mug, 2006 (c)

This green plastic mug is made from a tube that carried 81 mm mortar bombs. These were nicknamed 'greenies' by soldiers and adapted to use as cups. This example is a souvenir from the fighting at Musa Qala in Helmand, Afghanistan (2001-2014) and is marked with the nicknames of 34 soldiers from Barossa Platoon of 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment. The mug's handle is made of woven string formed into a grip and its surface is covered in green tape to allow inscriptions.
