Nylon bag containing a bone drill set, 2007
This drill set, manufactured by Composite Resources in the USA, was carried by Lance Corporal Chris Schivas, 16 Medical Unit, Royal Army Medical Corps, in Afghanistan between 2007 and 2010. The electric intraosseous drill is used to inject fluids straight through the bone and into the marrow of an injured soldier. The device is especially effective for treating casualties in the field who are in extreme pain, suffering from respiratory failure or shock. It requires less skill to insert than a needle into a vein and has fewer serious complications.
