'Pointlessness' (or 'Gone Tomorrow')

Pen and ink with watercolour by Steve Bell, 2013.

Published in 'The Guardian' on 1 May 2013, this cartoon shows an Afghanistan war medal, with the head of the British lion covered with a cloth, and inscribed 'For Pointlessness'. The medal ribbon colours equate with the medal ribbons of the old Afghan kingdom.

The cartoon was published following the deaths of Corporal William Savage and Fusilier Samuel Flint from Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland and Private Robert Hetherington, 51st Highland, 7th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland. They were killed when their Mastiff vehicle was destroyed when a huge roadside bomb detonated during a routine patrol in the Nahr-e Sarah district of Helmand.
