Made by Samuel Brunn, No 56 Charing Cross, London. With a slightly curved blade, mameluke hilt with a gilt metal cross guard and ivory grip. The blade is engraved with decoration, including the dedication, 'Presented by the Patriotic Fund "Lloyds" to Captain Edward Fleming 31st Regiment for his gallant Conduct and Sufferings from a Severe Wound in his head in Action with the Enemy at the Battle of Albuera - 16th of May, as recorded in the London Gazette, of the 6th June 1811.'; with a female figure holding an urn, the royal cypher of King George III, garter, motto, and the maker's name.
Merchants established funds to reward success in countering enemy threats to British commerce. The Lloyds Fund recognised officers' distinguished actions by granting cash, gold plate and decorated swords.
This sword was presented to Fleming following his gallant conduct, and wounding, at the Battle of Albuera in 1811, during the Peninsular War (1808-1814).
