Studies of Royal Horse Artillery riders, 1811 (c)

Charcoal and white wash drawing by William Barns Wollen (1857-1936), 1914 (c).

Studies of mounted Royal Horse Artillery riders of the Napoleonic era, wearing Tarleton helmets with bearskin crests and wielding whips.

Wollen was responsible for at least two oil paintings featuring the Royal Horse Artillery in action during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). The works portray Captain Norman Ramsay of the Royal Horse Artillery galloping his troop through the French Army to safety at the Battle of Fuentes d'Onoro (3-6 May 1811).

From a sketchbook of 28 sheets of charcoal and white wash drawings by William Barns Wollen.
