The capture of the Jingling Johnny by the 88th Regiment of Foot (Connaught Rangers) at the Battle of Salamanca, 1812

Watercolour, artist unknown.

A 'jingling johnny' was the name given to a musical instrument that consisted of a pole ornamented with a canopy, a crescent, and other shapes such as an eagle, and hung with bells and metal jingling objects. It was an important regimental symbol for French infantry units and losing it in battle would have been dishonourable. The 1st Battalion of the 88th were part of the 3rd Division which was commanded at Salamanca by Major-General Packenham.
