'The House and farme du Gourman from the Right', Chateau de Hougoumont, 1815
Sepia watercolour over pencil on paper by Denis Dighton (1792-1827), signed lower right, 'Denis Dighton del/ MP. to his. RH.PR' [Military Painter to his Royal Highness the Prince Regent], 1815. Number 1 from a series of nine landscape views of the battlefield of Waterloo, painted shortly after the decisive battle.
A view of the battle-scarred Chateau de Hougoumont in the distance. The chateau was a strongpoint in the Allied line during the Battle of Waterloo and was the site of bitter fighting throughout the 18 June 1815. This view of Hougoumont is reproduced in Dighton's famous painting of Waterloo which depicts the attack on the British Squares by French Cavalry. The helmet of the wounded French cuirassier in the painting is echoed by the discarded shako in this study.
