Letter from Lieutenant Standish O'Grady to his father the 1st Viscount Guillamore, 17 January 1814

In this letter, sent from Aspara, O'Grady relates that his regiment is about three miles from the French army and has been involved in several close engagements which he describes as 'hedge and ditch warfare'. He reports several deaths and injuries among his regiment and friends, including injury to Peter Heyliger, who later distinguished himself at Quatre-Bras, in 1815. He also mentions the death of Captain Gore of the 94th Regiment, killed in an altercation over a Spanish woman in Vitoria.

From a collection of 45 letters associated with Lieutenant-Colonel Standish O'Grady, later 2nd Viscount Guillamore, 1813-1830. These include those written whilst serving as a lieutenant with the 7th Light Dragoons in the Peninsular War (1808-1814) and at Waterloo (1815).
