Back plate of brass cuirass, 1815 (c)

The French heavy cavalry were known as 'Cuirassiers' because of their chest and back armour. This back plate was worn by a French Cuirassier at the Battle of Waterloo (1815). It was collected by Surgeon James Powell from the battlefield.
