'The farm house of Mont St Jean', 1815

Aquatint by and after James Rouse, published by H Colburn, London, 1816.

Rouse's Waterloo prints were produced in conjunction with William Mudford's 'An Historical Account of the Campaign in the Netherlands, (London, 1817). It is highly likely that these views of the Waterloo battlefield were drawn on the spot.

The farm house of Mont St Jean was on the road between Charleroi and Brussels and was used by the Allies as a major field hospital during and after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The print shows the main gate of the farm complex with the bodies of casualties lying amongst flattened crops in the foreground. The farm complex has been renovated and now houses a medical museum and a brewery.
