The 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) war diary for 1942 records elements of the Regiment refitting and regrouping in Mareopolis in July, August and September 1942. The photograph shows 'A' Company under inspection by the Regiment's Commanding Officer (CO), Lieutenant-Colonel A P Grafftey-Smith. 'A' Company are recorded as being moved to Mareopolis on 3 August 1942 for 'resting and maintenance'.
Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Paul Grafftey-Smith (1903-1960) took over command of 3rd County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters) in December 1941. He was replaced in June 1942 by Rupert Norton Harding-Newman (1907-2007).
