A Bengal Sepoy and His Family Meeting one of the Byraggee caste, 1799 (c)

Coloured aquatint by T Medland after Charles Gold, No 46 in the series 'Oriental Drawings', published by G and W Nicoll, Pall Mall, 1st September 1799.

The sepoy's (infantry soldier) uniform is typical of the East India Company's native troops of this era, uniting British and Indian styles of dress, the latter including a stylised turban and janghirs (shorts), the former a red jacket.
