The regiment was raised in 1898 at Wei Hai Wei (a new Chinese colony under Admiralty control) as a regular native unit with British officers and senior NCOs. It was liable for service anywhere in the world and was also known as the Chinese Regiment of Infantry and the Wei Hai Wei Regiment. It took part in the suppression of the 3rd China War (Boxer Rebellion) (1900), but was disbanded in 1903.
