Sappers of 237 Field Company, Royal Engineers, clearing a minefield in the aftermath of the First Army's attack on Toukabeur and Chaouach, April 1943

Photograph, World War Two, North Africa (1940-1943), 1943.

Allied tanks are visible in the background, waiting to cross the area once the engineers have carried out their unenviable task. This involved the crude and dangerous process of probing the ground with bayonets to reveal the location of mines, which would then have to be carefully removed by hand.

From a collection of British official war photographs relating to the 78th Division.
