'A Waterloo Hero! The Major part of the Scotch Grays', 1822 (c)

Full-length caricature portrait of a portly officer of the 2nd (or Royal North British) Dragoons, the 'Scots Greys', wearing the Waterloo Medal, established in 1816.

Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Pate Hankin commanded the 2nd (or Royal North British) Dragoons from 1821 until 1825. Hankin fought at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, charging with the Scots Greys, receiving a severe wound to the knee that might explain the subject's walking stick. Despite his military service and a knighthood received in 1822 Hankin seems to have been unable to deflect this satirical attack on his person.

Another version of this etching identifies the subject as another officer of the Greys, 'Lt Col Cheyney', Edward Hawkins Cheney, who, as a captain, gained considerable renown for his actions at Waterloo.
